Dasyra

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the sensation of passing through these gates between worlds. It feels like a very thin, very precise knife slicing away only the topmost layer of my skin. It doesn’t hurt, exactly . . . but a cold shiver that’s akin to pain covers me from head to toe as I plunge through the thin place in reality and fall back into the strange Wanfriel Forest.

I take two steps, cry out, and fall to my knees, where I stay drawing deep breaths as the throb in my bare foot slowly abates. Deep, deep breaths of air that is blessedly clear of ravaging wild magic. When I open my eyes, it’s not to the glare of a brewing magic storm but to the softness of green shadows beneath sheltering trees.

Grimacing, I reach down to touch my sore foot. My hand comes away sticky with blood. Ugh! I must have stepped on a sharp rock somewhere along the way. Before Lodírhal scooped me up and carried me across the Desolation in his arms.

My face heats. Memory of those strong arms enfolds me. I was unconscious for most of it, but here and there I floated into almost awareness, just enough to know that I was being held. Just enough to take comfort in that strength, to listen to the pulse of his heartbeat . . .

I place a hand against my burning cheek, then give my head a quick shake. I definitely should not indulge in such thoughts.

Where is that gods-blighted fae anyway?

When I look back over my shoulder, I can’t see the gate. From this side, it’s completely invisible. And there’s no sign of Lodírhal. He was only a few steps behind me on that treacherous bridge, but what does that even mean? Time passes strangely in the between of the worlds. For all I know, he won’t arrive in this spot for another year. Hardly a pleasant thought. While I don’t exactly relish my captor’s company, the idea of being left alone in this otherworldly forest, lost between worlds, with no idea where I am or where I’m going . . . no. Just no.

Clumsily I stand and turn, favoring my wounded foot. I’m fairly certain I’m facing the gate now, though it’s hard to know. I can’t perceive it. Too bad I didn’t think to bring any written spells with me on this little escapade. A spell to augment magic vision would certainly come in handy right about now.

Instead, I close my eyes. Last night, or whenever that was—it’s difficult to keep track of time while traveling between worlds—in the boat, Lodírhal asked me if I knew his true name. When I searched for it, I felt a connection between us. Something sharp and strange. Something undeniable. Would such a connection stretch through layers of realities?

Breathing slowly, focusing my awareness, I reach inside myself. Down into the depths of my soul, to the core where my heart beats. There it is, wrapped around my heart.
